FAQs
Registration Requirements for SUD Counselors
California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) regulations, effective April 1, 2005, require individuals who are not licensed professionals or previously certified to register with a DHCS-approved certifying organization.
Before processing your application, CADTP will verify that you have not been previously registered. If you were registered with another California certifying agency (CCAPP or CAADE), you must submit a Reciprocity Application and, if applicable, a Renewal Application.
Registration is the Path to Certification
Registration is not equivalent to and is not an alternative to certification. Once you are registered, you must complete the requirements for certification within five years.
Formal SUD Education
Counselors who have not completed the full 315 hours of SUD Formal Education for certification must show at least 50 hours completed within the last year to be eligible to renew. These hours must be documented on a transcript or certificate of completion that states the school name, student name, course name, date the course was completed, and the number of hours or credits completed.
Note for Online SUD Education Providers: No more than 10 hours per day will be accepted for online education courses. If a course is designated as a single module with a specific total number of hours on one certificate (for example, a 15-hour module), those hours may be accepted for that day; however, no other modules may be applied on the same date.
The courses you take must be towards the SUD certification. You can find the required topic areas here Academic Content Areas
Continuing Education Requirement
When renewing as a SUDRC III, you will be required to submit 20 CEUs. These CEUS must follow CADTP CEU guidelines. Review the Registered Continuing Education Requirements
