CADTP offers a simple online renewal process to renew your SUDCC and above credential.
Standard processing time is 30 days from the date the complete application is received by CADTP.
Please read all instructions carefully. Incomplete applications will be returned and must be resubmitted.

The Renewal Process
Gather all required documents
- Proof of 40-hours of completed continuing education (CE) training within the 2-year renewal window. View CEU requirements here.
- All courses must be verified with a certificate of completion by a CADTP approved CEU Provider.
- ALL SUD Counselors must include
- 3-hours of Ethics and of Confidentiality continuing education (CEU).
- ALL certifications with a CS designation must also include:
- 6 hours of supervisory training by a CADTP approved CEU Provider.
Complete the Form and Sign the Renewal
- Upload CEU Certificates of Completion. These will be reviewed by CADTP staff; make sure they are organized and accurate for fast processing.
- List details of denials, suspension, or revocations by DHCS.
- Optional: Upgrade demographics.
- Select the Certification Level.
- Select optional Rush Services.
- Check the box for a rush service request: 5-business days: $75; 10-business days: $50.
- The total due will update to include rush service fees.
- Make the payment.
- Sign up for the newsletter, if you don’t already receive it. CADTP sends a newsletter each month; Stay up to date with new trainings, on-topic articles, and fresh resources.
- Press the Next Step button.
- You will be transferred sign the application and the CADTP Code of Ethics.
- Initial and sign where indicated.
- Once completed, you will receive a receipt and the signed agreement via email.
CADTP will notify you if there are any issues with your renewal application.

About Credentials
The Substance Use Disorder Certifed Counselor (SUDCC) credential is accredited by NCCA/ICE and is recognized by DHCS, those holding this credential are authorized to work in any substance use disorder (SUD) treatment modality.
CADTP is one of three SUD counselor certifying organizations recognized by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), Licensing and Certification Division (LCD).
As required in the regulations, all certifying agencies are currently accredited by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE), a part of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
Substance Use Disorder Counselor Certification is required by law for all those who provide counseling services in any program that is licensed or certified by the California Department of Health Care Services or DHCS. (California Code of Regulations, Title 9, Section 13000, et seq., as effective on April 1, 2005). The regulations are available at: www.dhcs.ca.gov.
Renewal Requirements
All certified counselors are required to bi-annually (every 2 years) and submit the following:
- Certification Renewal Form Completed
- Uniform Code of Conduct; CADTP Code of Ethics – signed, dated and each page initialed
- 40 Hours Minimum of SUD Continuing Education
- Must include 3-hours of Ethics and Confidentiality (may be combined in one training)
- If you are a SUDCC-CS: CEUs must include 6-hours of
clinical supervision course - Non-Refundable Payment of
: $135 for SUDCC; $160 for SUDCC II, SUDCC or SUDCC IV; $185 for SUDCC II-CS SUDCC III-CS, SUDCC IV-CS
CADTP will only accept 10 hours of CEUs from an on-line source gained each day. The exception is CEUs that are designated as bundled together and noted as a single course with a specific number of hours on one certificate.
