    Complete your initial registration as a substance use disorder counselor in a few easy steps!

    Standard processing takes up to two weeks.

    Initial Registration Application

    The Registration Process

    Gather all required documents

    • Proof of 9-hour introductory course completion.
    • Valid ID or Driver’s License

    Complete the Form and Sign the Application

    1. Enter your name and contact information for you and your employer, if any.
    2. Upload 9-hour Certificate of Completion.
    3. List details of denials, suspensions, or revocations by DHCS.
    4. Optional: Upgrade demographics.
    5. Select optional Rush Services.
    6. Pay the Initital Registration Fee $100
        • The total due will update to include rush service fees if selected.
    7. Enter payment information. (Discover, MasterCard, or Visa ONLY).
    8. Sign up for the newsletter, if you don’t already receive it. CADTP sends a fresh newsletter each month. Stay up to date with new training, on-topic articles, and fresh resources.
    9. Press the Next Step button.
    10. You will be transferred to the application and the CADTP Code of Ethics.
    11. Initial and sign where indicated.
    12. Once completed, you will receive a receipt and the signed agreement via email.
    13. A copy of your application and documents will be sent automatically to CADTP for review.

    CADTP will notify you if there are any issues with your renewal application.

    Begin the Initial Registration Application

    Registration Requirements for SUD Counselors

    California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) regulations, effective April 1, 2005, require individuals who are not licensed professionals or previously certified to register with a DHCS-approved certifying organization.

    Before processing your application, CADTP will verify that you have not been previously registered. If you were registered with another California certifying agency (CCAPP or CAADE), you must submit a Reciprocity Application and, if applicable, a Renewal Application.

    Selection of Certifying Agency

    California regulations allow employers to determine which of the certifying organization certifications they will accept. Potential registrants are advised to check with their employer, if any, before registering.

    Registration is the Path to Certification

    Registration is not equivalent to and is not an alternative to certification. Once you are registered, you must complete the requirements for certification within five years.

    Completion of Registrant’s Orientation (9-hour Course)

    Applicants for registration are required to complete a 9-hour orientation class prior to registration, consisting of 3 hours of SUD Ethics, 3 hours of SUD Confidentiality, and 3 hours of SUD Professional Boundaries. This can be done in a single combined class on the three subjects. You must submit official proof of completion with this application.
